Heather Townsend

Coach to Accountants, best-selling six-times author and global expert in what it takes to grow and scale a small accounting firm.

Regardless of whether your firm’s thing is accounting, tax, bookkeeping, Portfolio FD or a mix of everything, Heather has a track record of helping firms like yours grow and scale.

Heather has spent the last 20+ years helping accounting firm owners grow and scale their businesses. Frustrated with the number of ‘mentoring’ organisations focused on the accountancy profession that promised the earth and delivered very little, Heather started The Accountants’ Growth Club. Its aim hasn’t changed, it’s there to help you grow and scale your firm while working fewer hours with less stress. The club now has a team of Growth Experts assisted by Club Hosts who are all there to help you succeed.

Here's heather townsend's - back story

Heather took Engineering Science at Oxford University. At the time, the second most popular career route for graduates from this course was to go into accountancy. During university, Heather swore she wouldn’t become an accountant. She also swore she wouldn’t follow in her mother’s footsteps into teaching. The universe decided to have the last laugh, and in 2004 Heather started in learning and development, working for BDO, a top 5 UK accounting firm. That was over 20 years ago now, and she has never stopped helping accountants achieve their career and business goals.

In 2009, newly redundant, with 2 toddlers, she started her own business. She would freely admit that back then, she was absolutely clueless about how to market herself. In fact, she went to a networking event with a speaker who was talking about an ‘introduction to social networking’ – what you would now know as social media. This then quickly led to her realising she loved blogging and getting the accolade of becoming Bedfordshire’s most influential person on Twitter.  Since that point, she has become a highly respected influencer and expert in the world of accounting.

Like many of the Accountants Growth Club members, she has a heap of professional qualifications. She’s a fellow of the professional speaking association and has graced the stage at the biggest accounting conferences, QB Connect San Jose in 2019 and XeroCon London. She’s been coaching and advising accountants since 2005 and was an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with the ICF in 2009. Since then, she has gone on to clock up over 3600 hours of coaching helping accountants and professionals in practice grow and scale the business. In 2010 she became a chartered member of the CIPD.

In 2023, she took on her hardest challenge to date. She was elected to Central Bedfordshire Council as the ward member for Flitwick and Steppingley. The world of local politics is a murky place, but she has learnt more about people and diffusing conflict in the last 15 months than in the last ten years of her professional career.
